In recent years there has been a growing focus on the issue of men's health, both physical and mental, driven by health professionals in New Zealand.
Men and women both continue to face risk and in particular, men do posses the "she's right" attitude putting them at an even greater risk of reducing life expectancy. The good news is the life expectancy gap is decreasing due to education and awareness by males that they're not infallible.
Men have begun to embrace healthier lifestyles, eating nutritious food, exercise and cutting down on excessive smoking, alcohol, fatty foods and sugars.
However, there is still a lot of progress to achieve in helping men live a healthier happier life.
Encouragement, assistance and support are just some of the positives when associated with the Men's Shed. The majority of men who participate in a Men's Shed feel a marked improvement in their own health and well-being.
How can the Men's Shed help?
A message from the members of the Hibiscus Men's Shed.
We, the members, welcome all to our community-based Men's Shed. Come and meet us, you will find that we are probably very similar to yourself. We arrive from all walks of life, bringing many various talents to the shed community and the Hibiscus Coast community as a whole.
It's our home where we complete meaningful community projects such as making new or repairing equipment, play and learning tools while supporting schools, kindergartens, daycare, age care and the greater community.
Respect, sharing and genuine friendship is our shed philosophy while sharing our purpose to our community.
The camaraderie of the members, the purpose of self-involvement, the pleasing emotion of team effort has many HEALTH and MENTAL positives. Of course, your own medical practitioner will advise you for all health concerns.
On various occasions, the Men's Shed does have on-site health workshops conducted by health professionals. These workshops are non-intrusive to the individual but are an enlightenment to those attending.
An AED device is permanently on-site along with at least one First Aid Officer in daily attendance.

Academic Studies
Since the inception of the Men's Shed there has been much research and papers written concerning the human benefits of the Men's Shed movement. Without writing a lengthy essay, the unanimous conclusion is the positive profound effect of health, mental and social wellbeing of participating members and their individual relationships.
